Steamboat Springs places a high value on education with an excellent public school system as well as several choices of private schools. The local community college provides opportunities for continuing education as well as Associate of Arts degrees.
Public Schools
Steamboat Springs is serviced by Routt County School District (RE-2). There are two elementary schools K-5, one middle school 6-8 and one high school 9-12. The district has adopted a 'Continuous Progress' approach curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grade. The goal is to identify the needs of each student and strive to meet those individualized needs. Good teaching, reasonably sized classes, well-planned curricula and the latest in materials and technology serve the best interests of local youth. The average spending per student during the 1999-2000 year is budgeted at $5,479. Total K-12 enrollment as of October 1 each year has grown from 1,526 in 1988 to 1,913 in 1999.
In 1993 the citizens of Steamboat Springs approved a ½ cent sales tax that is dedicated to growth and technology and is distributed by two community commissions. This has added $1.2 million to the school district each year.
